On the nature of supernatural luck: |
|
|
There is fortune and misfortune, but luck can always be described as some form of competence and most importantly context.. A middle-aged fat man stops into a 7/11 early one Tuesday morning on his way to work, his thoughts are filled with the painful fight he had last night with his ex-wife. His heart was still stinging at some of the things she had called him, loser, idiot, poser, and queer. He could still remember how sweet their life together had been. How she used to kiss him on the chin every night before he rolled over to fall asleep. Robotically he grabbed a cup and filled it with the dark blend, after assiduously sniffing the pot to ensure its freshness. Cup in hand he joined the long queue at the register, and sank back into his growing financial gloom. The line was delayed due to a small boy who was buying a super-sized pack of red and blue gummy worms, carefully and distrustful of the attendant a nickel or penney at a time. Finally reaching the head of the line he offer 2 dollar bills to pay the fee of $1.04 for steaming 16 ounce cup. The attendant asked if he had 4 cents, and he started to search his pockets, but quickly gave up and hoped that the attendant would tell him to forget it and pay it next time. But the attendant was new, and he was focused on doing everything right today, since he had been warned about his shortages at the staff meeting last night, and he really needed this job.. His wife was pregnant again, and his car was in bad need of an oil change. His change is of 2 quarters, nine nickels and a penny. He felt a bit insulted by all the nickels, and so he renewed his search for the 4 cents, finding it in his inside pocket. But the attendant had moved on to the next customer, and simply ignored his protestations. He pocketed the change and left. He made a few other stops on his way to work, at the drugstore, and the cleaners and after these transactions he had been able to rid himself of most of the noisy small change. ---------- |
